2017 Drug Aware Margaret River Pro – Florence and Fitzgibbons Steal the Show!

It’s a wrap at this year’s 2nd CT event, the 2017 Drug Aware Margaret River Pro, and the rankings for both the men and women have had a shake up! The contest waiting period saw plenty of swell, and this year saw the first ever heats held at North Point. The waves around Western Australia are renown for their power, and sent one surfer out of the contest early due to injury. The unspoiled beauty of the Margaret River area attracted plenty of spectators to the event, and all in all it went down as one of the best in WA yet! Now let’s get into the surfing…

Ladies first, and defending world champ Tyler Wright notched up a massive score in Round 3 to stake her claim for the trophy this year. Malia Manuel was right behind her throughout the heat but Wright just pulled through to take the win. In Malia’s following elimination heat she injured her knee and had to withdraw from the event, sure hope she’s back soon…

In the first heat of the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro quarterfinals Sage Erickson met Courtney Conlogue, who won here back in 2015. Erickson also lost five of her last six heats with Conlogue, so the pressure was most certainly on. Despite a rocky start to the contest, Erickson powered through her quarterfinal heat and upset Conlogue by knocking her out of the event…

Not long after that, Sally Fitzgibbons racked up a big score in her quarterfinal heat with Carissa Moore, with a 9.73 that Moore couldn’t come back from…

Fitzgibbons went on to take out Stephanie Gilmore in the semifinals, and in the finals she was up against defending world champion and defending event champion Tyler Wright. It was a close battle but Fitzgibbons took it with 14.90 points to Wright’s 12.53.

Now over to the men, and things got off to a great start as Round 1 was held at North Point. Sebastien Zietz won the event last year and it looked like he might do it again after this insane barrel in the last heat of the day…

As the contest rattled through the round stages surfers like Slater, Medina, and Fanning all fell by the wayside, but Jordy Smith managed to power through. Up against Flores in Round 5 he clocked up a solid 9 to see his way into the quarterfinals…

If anybody hadn’t noticed just how well John John Florence was surfing throughout the event, they sure knew about it by the time the semifinals started. In his matchup against Jack Freestone he sealed the win with a 9.37 and 9.90…

Conditions were perfect for the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro finals day, solid sets pulsing through at Main Break and a big crowd on the cliff enjoying the weekend, here’s how it went down…

So John John Florence has the yellow jersey back as the world’s best head over to Bells Beach for the last Australian contest of the 2017 WSL season, but just how long can he keep a hold on it?
